Farida Hughes: A Line Doesn’t End With Me
July 1 — August 8, 2021
What connects us? What brings us together as human beings linked to others through family histories and social experiences? Artist Farida Hughes explores these questions in an exhibition comprised of her colorful abstract series of Blend paintings, as well as new Vigil paintings that serve as a reminder of lives lived and lost.
With vivid color and abstract form, each of the Blends paintings displays a composite portrait of the layers of an individuals’ cultural and ethnic backgrounds, based on stories that Hughes solicits and collects. She responds to the anecdotes collected as she creates each of the abstract paintings. This series began as a way to unwrap the artist’s own multi-cultural background, and subsequently grew to celebrate the unique blendedness of each person contributing a story, and the effects of historical moments that the narratives inevitably present. Begun in 2017, Hughes continues to collect stories from friends and acquaintances, and grow this community of Blends. Using her abstract visual language in this way the artist aims to celebrate and value human difference.
